The recent spell of persons with Kenyan roots shining abroad
seems not to be ending soon.
The latest entrant on the list being Divock Okoth
Origi, the nineteen-year-old Lille and Belgium national team striker.
Divock is
Belgian born but to a Kenyan father- Mike Origi who played for the Kenyan
national team Harambee Stars.
Apart from his father, his family boasts of a number of
other football stars such as former Harambee Stars player and Gor Mahia captain
Austin Oduor and his cousin who currently plays for the Stars Arnold Origi.
The exciting young star scored the winner for his team in
their Group H fixture against Algeria that saw Belgium sail into the second
round of the World Cup finals.
His goal earned him a spot into the records as the youngest
player to score in the finals after Messi in the 2006 World Cup.
This also makes him
the youngest Belgian to score in thier World Cup history and the first player of Kenyan
origin to score at a FIFA World Cup tournament.
Origi has played for Belgium’s under 15,16, 17
and 19 sides, making a late entry into the senior team after christian
Benteke was ruled out of the tournament with an injury.
Divock Okoth Origi is the latest inclution to the list of
people making headlines in the international scene with Kenyan origin following
the likes of Lupita Nyongo, Barrack Obama, among others.
