It was relief for Algeria and Africa as Algeria joined
Nigeria as the second African team to reach the second round of the 2014 World
Cup.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria just needed a draw
against Russia to see them through to the second round, and a draw is what they
got.
1-1 was the end result after Islam Slimani headed in the 60th
minute from a Yacine Brahimi freekick to put the Algerians level.
This draw came after Algeria had secured their first
win in the World Cup since their 1982 victory against West Germany; this time beating South
Korea 4-2.
Again it will
be the second time in 32 years that Germany and Algeria meet in the World Cup finals, the Algerians hopeful that history will favor them with another win.
The Algerian’s progression to the round of 16
provides futher cause for cheer for Africa as they ensured that Africa has two
teams in the second round of the World Cup for the first time in history.
